Progressives, Bifocals, and Single Vision
We offer a wide array of lenses to suit your needs. Lenses can be made in so many different ways and styles. The most common lens choice is single vision lenses. These lenses focus for one distance only, usually distance vision, but reading glasses are also considered single vision. All of our lenses are made in cooperation with a precision optical lab and nearly all of our lenses are digitally produced. For many of us we variable focus lenses and that is where progressives and bifocal come in. These lenses are needed for patients that loose their ability to focus naturally over time. Bifocals offer distance vision at the top of the lens and under the bifocal line offer near focus. This technology works for some, but advancements in technology now allow us to offer no-lined bifocals, called progressives. We use state of the art progressive designs from companies that specialize in producing optical lenses for many optical devices, like cameras and telescopes, to make our progressives. This allows for customization of each lens to a patient’s specific perception needs and desires. One progressive lens that is often overlooked but usually needed is a computer progressive. This progressive allows much better vision at a computer or while at work. Ask our opticians about what lens design will be best for you but rest assured that we only use the best lens options.
One of the best and most important lens options to add is an anti-reflective / anti-glare coating. This coating makes the lenses more scratch resistant, easier to clean, and allows more light to get to your eye resulting in better vision. As an added bonus most anti-reflective coatings will also warranty the lenses against scratching, which means if the lens gets scratched then we will replace it for you at no cost (assuming the lens is still under warranty, sorry nothing lasts forever). Having an anti-reflective coating is extremely important when driving at night because getting more light to your eye means better vision. There are also new coatings that cut out blue wavelength light; blue light has recently been shown to be associated with macular degeneration risk. Blue Light
Transitions & Photogray
Transition and Photogray lenses darken when exposed to UV light. When indoors, the lenses clear up and appear like any other eyeglass lenses. Transitions work very well for those that are often in and outdoors throughout the day but sadly don’t change very well in the car. This happens because most car windows block UV light. Ask our opticians about which option will best fit your lifestyle because we are the best resource to aid in your decision.
Lenses are tinted for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the color is just an accent to the already stylish frame. Other times the patient is sensitive to bright light (Photophobia) and tints can aid in reducing their photophobia. Tints can be a “solid” color, where the color is the same throughout the lens or they can be a gradient where the top of the lens is dark and the bottom of the lens is less tinted. This can be useful for those who are sensitive to overhead lighting but when reading they want all the light they can get. Tints can also be used to increase or decrease contrast. Use our expertise to make the best tinting solution for you.
Sunglass lenses range in color. Common colors include gray, brown, green, amber and rose. We offer any color or density you can imagine, but keep in mind that darker is not always better. Often it is best to get a color, like brown, that will increase contrast but you will want to add polarization to the lens. Polarized lenses cut glare and allow for better vision overall. Because glare causes discomfort in the sunlight, getting a polarized lens is the best way to ensure comfort outside and while driving. Our doctors rarely, if ever, recommend a sunglass lens that is not polarized. You can also add a mirror finish to the surface of the lens for a cool 1980’s look.
